I see London, I see France, I see you at a Contradance!  with Dan and Jocelyn Vilter and Matthew Vilter

Come learn this very simple but rewarding style of folk dance. Similar to square dancing, with many of the same moves (but without all the matching outfits), we dance in lines rather than squares, so we can accommodate as many couples as will fit on the floor. If you can walk, you can dance. It helps to know right from left, but we can even work around that. Don’t worry about bringing a partner, we switch off for every dance anyway. Learn it here this afternoon, do a little more tonight at the dance and then find a dance near your home and do it there. Many kids grow up Contradancing and go on to introduce their children to it. Contradancing is more well known on the east coast but you will find it all over the country. For example, we dance at least once every weekend in the Los Angeles area. You can see some short videos of our family dancing in various locations around the country on our website: http://www.vilter.us/contradance/index.html

This is the best article about Contradancing that I have read:
http://www.childgrove.org/gregsarticle.htm”...a dance form unknown to most people yet practiced with great devotion and abandon throughout the United States, from New England to California.”

Provided:  We will be providing a nationally known, expert caller to help you learn the dances. Susan Michaels has been calling Contras, Squares and family dances for over 18 years and loves to share what she knows with new (and especially young) dancers. We will also have live music - 2 or 3 musicians for your dancing pleasure. Instrumentation will likely consist of fiddle, flute, guitar, mandolin and/or possibly keyboard. We will also provide a handout to help people learn a little more about the history of contra and to find dances close to their home.

Please Bring:  Nothing special - comfortable shoes or bare feet are appropriate. I do not recommend high heels. Really, sneakers are fine. Women and sometimes men wear twirly skirts, just because they are fun, but any cool, comfortable clothing is suitable. You will perspire! We always bring a small hand towel or bandanna with which to mop our sweaty brows.

Who Are We?  Dan and Jocelyn embraced the idea of homeschooling when their son, Matthew, was about three years old. They began to read about it extensively, mostly on the old aol homeschooling message boards. We discovered the idea of unschooling from reading Sandra Dodd and Pam Sorooshian and have never looked back. Dan has spoken at the HSC conference in Sacramento on the benefits of video gaming and also at the Live and Learn conference in Albuquerque in 2006. They helped start the Dragontree Home Learners park day group in Long Beach. Dan is the production manager at the Haugh Performing Arts Center in Glendora CA, on the campus of Citrus College.
